The cosmetic use of extra virgin olive oil is a constant throughout history

The cosmetic use of extra virgin olive oil is a constant throughout history in all the ancient civilisations of the Mediterranean area. In ancient Egypt, around 2000 BC, it was used in the court of the pharaohs in their rituals and was held in great esteem, proof of which is that archaeologists found decorated vases in the tomb of Ramses III that had contained oil to accompany the pharaoh on his journey to the afterlife.

The ancient Greeks healed the wounded skin of athletes with this oil and Homer in his work “The Odyssey” calls it liquid gold. The Romans used it as a solvent and fixative of the aromas of flowers to make perfumes.
Nowadays, extra virgin olive oil is an ingredient in a multitude of cosmetic preparations, both for hair and skin, because its chemical structure is very similar to the natural oil of the skin, so it is absorbed without problems and helps to regenerate it. It is a good moisturiser for dry skin, applied with a gentle massage, it combats dryness on heels, knees and elbows. It is also useful for soothing itching, stinging and burns, helping to repair damaged tissues.
Extra virgin olive oil has proven to be effective in solving hair problems, as its high polyphenol and vitamin E content helps to strengthen hair follicles.

At home we can prepare simple creams and masks to suit our personal needs. A simple formula to moisturise dry skin is to mix 250cc of extra virgin olive oil with an egg yolk, beat well and apply for about 20 minutes, then rinse and dry your face and you will notice that your skin is softer and more moisturised.
Our extra virgin olive oil can also be used as a make-up remover applied with cotton wool or a make-up remover disc, it removes make-up without any problems and helps to tone the skin.

We can prepare an aromatic lavender oil by mixing 400cc of extra virgin olive oil with 2 or 3 heaped tablespoons of dried lavender flowers in a bottle. Keep the bottle in a cool place away from light. After about two weeks, our lavender oil will be ready, which is a natural remedy that alleviates muscular discomfort. We can also apply a few drops to our face before going to bed and it can help us to fall asleep.
